Plagiarism
Just this past week I found out that the leader of Romania was stripped of his PhD when it was found out that approximately half of the pages of his dissertation had been plagiarized. His education minister was found to have plagiarized part of his dissertation too. The education minister in Germany and many others in leadership positions in the European Union have been found out as plagiarizers. The New York Times reported this in June of this year and does not bode well for the reputation of doctoral candidates. You can access the article here.
I know how learners write at the middle level and the high school levels so it doesn't take a genius to figure out when someone is plagiarizing. Plagiarism will be addressed according to the rules of the institute I end up potentially working for. Personally, I would use a combination of techniques to combat the potential of plagiarism. The newspaper article linked above as well as other articles will be used as examples of plagiarism not paying off. I will also use the lessons provided by Dennis O'Connor on his 21st Century Information Fluency website here. I could also use a site like Turnitin. The best overall way to guard against plagiarism is to have project based learning activities that have the learner operating at the higher levels of Bloom's revised taxonomy.
