Learning Objectives
Objective one: Learners will identify and list keywords for the week's readings and post them to the class wiki with definitions no longer than 140 characters in length with 90 percent accuracy.
What I am trying to achieve with this objective is to have the students get used to social media writing by using twitter rules in a controlled environment. This skill also helps the learner become a better, more focused writer. This particular strategy matches with Understanding on Bloom's revised taxonomy. Even though the learners are identifying and listing keywords which would be at Bloom's level of Remembering, they have to be able to summarize those keywords succinctly. On October 31st of 2012 R.L. Stine created an entire Halloween scary story in 13 tweets on twitter with each tweet being no longer than 140 characters (spaces and punctuation included). You can read the Storified tweets here.
Tool: Wiki
Potential Challenges: Anyone with access can make changes for good or for bad. The issue of territoriality could arise. Teachers have to be willing to give up some control to the students while the students also need to be taught how to use the tool effectively.
Strengths: Helps with writing, editing, and collaboration skills. Wikis help provide for student differentiation and best of all they are FREE.
