Learning Objectives
Objective three: Using an online survey tool, learners will create and administer a survey about social media usage among their peer groups by including ten questions that are more than yes/no, right/wrong answers and be able to report the results in two weeks time with 100 percent accuracy.
In addition to using online polling resources, students will get a pretty good idea of what the social media usage is among people in their peer groups. The activity fits squarely with Analyzing in Bloom's revised taxonomy. First, however, I would have my learners review the information from the University of Texas at Austin's website http://www.utexas.edu/learn/surveys/index.html. This activity also has the learners developing and posing effective questions. One of the primary skills that people need to be successfully literate in social media or even being online in general is accessing information quickly and efficiently through the use of good questions.
Tool: SurveyMonkey, Zoomerang, KwikSurveys, Google Forms, SurveyGizmo
Potential Challenges: The ability to ask follow up questions or for clarification is lacking. Wording questions properly. Can be impersonal and uninviting. Teachers have to give up some control.
Strengths: Easy to use, real time results. Students develop their own questions so the tool allows for differentiated instruction. Both teacher and learner can benefit from the results.
